Ruthenium is a metal belonging to the platinum group, used to make dental alloys as its addition in small quantities generates a high number of crystallisation nuclei during solidification, consequently forming a small grain structure. This effect leads to an increase in the mechanical strength of the alloy, improving its homogeneity and ensuring greater tenacity and integrity of the edges. The characteristics of this metal make it useful for the preparation of solutions for decorative use.

Ruthenium has four different crystalline forms and becomes opaque at ordinary temperatures, oxidising with an explosive reaction.

Associated with platinum and palladium, it is used for the production of highly wear-resistant electrical contacts. It is also a versatile catalyst and, associated with iridium, is used by companies producing luxury accessories.
