White gold and platinum: differences, similarities and advice for your choice

The discreet elegance of metallic white, the brilliance that enhances diamonds, the refinement of precious and durable materials: white gold and platinum have always been some of the most popular metals in jewellery. But what really sets them apart? And which one should be chosen?
Origins and composition
Platinum is a rare and natural metal, belonging to the platinum group metal family (PGM), which also includes rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium and ruthenium. It has a greyish-white colour, is extremely malleable, ductile and is popular due to its corrosion resistance.
Whitegold, instead, does not exist in nature. It is an alloy composed of pure gold (yellow, as found in nature) and bleaching metals, including mainly palladium. The result is a brilliant and modern silver-white shade, ideal to accompany precious stones such as diamonds.
The main differences
Despite the very similar appearance, platinum and white gold have a number of significant differences that affect both the price and the characteristics of use:
? Price: Platinum is more expensive, mainly because it is rarer in nature and requires a larger amount of metal to make a piece of jewellery.
? Hardness and strength: Platinum is softer and tends to scratch more easily, but scratches do not result in material loss. White gold, instead, is stiffer, but its surface is often treated with a rhodium plating that, over time, can wear out and require maintenance.
? Weight: Platinum is denser and heavier, giving the jewel a stronger feel.
? Nature:As mentioned, platinum is a natural metal, while white gold is the result of a process.
? Aestheticdurability: While platinum tends to develop an opaque patina over time (which many consider beautiful), white gold retains its shine only if it is periodically polished and rhodium-plated.
Uses in jewellery
Both metals are undisputed protagonists in the creation of high-end jewellery, in particular:
? Engagementrings and wedding rings
? Necklaces and pendants
? Bracelets and earrings
The neutral shine of platinum and white gold enhances diamonds and clear gemstones, giving a timeless elegance.
Which one should be chosen?
The choice between white gold and platinum depends on:
? Personalstyle: Looking for something more prestigious and "heavy"? Platinum is for you. Prefer a lighter, more accessible option? White gold is the ideal choice.
? Usagehabits:if you wear jewellery every day, platinum can offer greater structural longevity. However, it requires attention to scratches.
? Budget: white gold is generally more economical, but may incur higher maintenance costs over time.
